Why Britain must be worried - Russian hackers will target Parliament Brexit vote after Trump success

Russian hackers who helped get Donald Trump elected will turn their attention to influencing Britain's possible Parliament vote on Brexit, cyber security experts fear, reports Mirror.co.uk.

Kremlin-sponsored hackers were alleged to have attacked Hilary Clinton 's Democrat party in a number of hacks feared to have helped catapult shock US election winner Trump to power, uni experts claim.

Now Moscow will be spurred on to launch similar hacks aimed at impacting elections and sowing distrust in politics in the UK and Europe.

Professor Thomas Rid, from King’s College London, said Vladimir Putin 's Russia will stir up extreme left and right-wing feeling, including the polarised row over Brexit.

 

President Vladimir Putin's Russia is said to be behind hackers who attacked Hilary Clinton's campaign and will now set their sights on influencing Brexit and other European votes 

 

He warned that Russia's information war will only become more effective as divisions fester over increasing support for extreme parties like France's National Front.

Professor Rid said:

“The ground is becoming more fertile for Russia’s influence operation.
“Trump is the embodiment of that."

 

Cyber security experts say Russian hackers are rubbing their hands together over successful cyber attacks on a string of nations, including their biggest prize: landing Donald Trump as US President

Cyber security expert James Lewis, from the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC, described what would be the gleeful Russian reaction to getting their preferred candidate into the White House.
He said:

“What they’ll learn from this is: ‘We did it, we got away with it, we got the outcome we wanted.'
“This will only increase their desire to intervene.”
