Reports have emerged that Retired President Kibaki, Raila Odinga and business mogul Chris Kirubi are among the people that were extensively spied on by the British intelligence service Mi5.
According to a report from leading French newspaper Le Monde which investigated on the matter, Kibaki was among key global political and business players who were subject to the British surveillance.
The surviliance involved intercepting communications as they were being beamed between satellites.
According to Le Monde, Britons intercepted communications between President Mwai Kibaki and his advisers, as well as former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s private conversations.
Mi5 spied on him and Kirubi for three years when Kibaki was in power between.
Government spokesman Eric Kiraithe last week said there was no immediate comment about the reports but were being looked into.
"Right now the government cannot comment. The government will issue a comprehensive statement once the review has been done,” said Mr Kiraithe.
Other leaders who the were spied on includes: Nigeria’s Tony Elumelu and Dahiru Mangal. A former ally of President Kabila and businessman, Moise Katumbi, Joseph Kabila of Congo, Angola’s Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, Nigeria’s Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan and Ghana’s John Kafuor, as well as head of states of Togo, Guinea-Conakry, Sudan, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
