Reasons why you must use Whatsapp but not Snapchat

The best messaging apps for protecting users' conversations from corporate, personal or government eavesdroppers have been named.

Research by Amnesty International reveals that the most secure messaging app is Facebook-owned WhatsApp, joined in the top position by its less secure Messenger, because the ratings are grouped by parent company.

They were closely followed by Apple's iMessage and FaceTime, and Telegram.

Amnesty slammed Snapchat, Microsoft's Skype and BlackBerry Messenger for paling in comparison when it comes to privacy.

It also urged technology giants to adopt end-to-end encryption as a default and said that companies needed to better inform their customers as to how their messaging data was being stored and used.

"Many of us trust these apps with intimate details of our personal life. Companies that fail to take basic steps to protect our communications are failing that trust," said the rights organisation.
"Amnesty International is calling on companies to apply end-to-end encryption as a default.
"It is also calling on technology companies to clearly inform users of the level of encryption applied to their messaging services."

The research took into account companies' use of encryption, as well as how they approached online threats, and their commitment to respecting users' privacy and freedom of expression.
