Kenyan doctor, Dr Kizzie Shako, leads campaign against gender-based violence

Dr Kizzie Shako is a police surgeon.
Getting justice for victims of any form of violence in Kenya can be a gruelling, emotionally draining process. In most cases one has to move from office to office narrating their ordeal to different people in order to get a Police Medication Examination Form.

This form will then be used in court with the help of a police surgeon or a government registered doctor as evidence.

Many people give up the search for the form and in effect, their search for justice.

For the only female police surgeon, Dr. Kizzie Shako, working in Nairobi, getting victims to access this document is not just a national duty; it is for her a calling.

Her clients are mainly victims of sexual and gender based violence. They open up to her, not just the physical but also emotional
wounds.

Dr Shako works in a team of three. and is the only woman. Little wonder then that many women find it easier to confide in her.

After interacting with so many victims of gender-based violence, Dr Shako started the “Vunja Kimya” blog, which is Swahili for “Break the Silence”. It is a platform that she uses to advice people on the need to speak up against violence.
